How to Check the Suitability of Your Book Idea (Before You Write a Word)
Make sure there is a waiting audience of millions of people if you want millions of people to read your inspiring remarks.
Nobody wants to spend time writing a book that no one will read.
Because of this, it’s important to look at the competition to make sure your book idea is good. Answering the following three questions will help.
Are there any books that compare? You don’t have a good idea if you can’t locate a book (audiobook or print book) like yours in the Amazon marketplace (because no one is that original).
Can you match up? You can determine how well your book will sell by looking at the market’s competitors.
Do we have enough consumers? You need to be sure there is enough demand for the kind of book you intend to write for it to be worthwhile.
These questions have three phases to finding solutions:
First, locate your category on Amazon.
On Amazon, you must first choose an appropriate genre for your book concept.
This is how:
Step #1:
Go to amazon.com and navigate to Departments > Kindle E-Readers & Books > Kindle Books.
Next, click Best Sellers & More in the menu.
Scroll down until you see the menu below and click Kindle Best Sellers.
Select Kindle eBooks from the menu.
Pick a category and subcategory that fit closest to your book idea.
For my book, I chose the category Self-Help and the subcategory Personal Transformation.
Step #2:
Look For Related Topics in the Top 20 Books in Your Category
My book’s thesis was self-reinvention. I wasn’t looking for novels with the word “reinvention” in the title specifically, but I was looking for works with themes like behavior change, personality change, and life change.
You’ve now responded to the first question in this step. You are aware of any novels that are similar to your idea.
You must start at the beginning if you cannot locate any books that are comparable. Review your list of potential book topics, then try again.
If, however, there exist novels that are comparable to yours, you can move on to the next phase. It will respond to the following two queries:
Are there enough customers and are you able to compete?
Step #3:
Verify Your Category’s Top Books’ Best Seller List
You need to know how well the books in your category sell in order to determine whether you can compete in that area and whether there are enough potential readers.
On Amazon, you won’t find any exact sales figures, but you may get a good idea of them by looking at their “Best Seller” ranking.
You can find a book’s Best Seller rank by scrolling down its product page. The rank will be listed under Product Details.
The higher the rank (with #1 being the highest), the more copies it sells — but also, the harder it will be to beat. You have to look for categories where the average best seller rank is neither too low nor too high.
Here’s how it typically works:
Rankings over 1,000 will have impressive sales figures but will also face intense competition.
Although less competitive, rankings between 1,000 and 30,000 will still have respectable sales figures.
The least competitive rankings are those below 30,000, but they will also have lesser sales.
The sweet spot is in the middle, as you can see. A category with poor sales statistics and an overly competitive market are both undesirable.
Choose categories where you believe you can top the top three novels in that category.
You ought to be able to place in the top three in categories with moderate competition if you stick to the recommendations made in this essay.
And if you can position your book among the top three when it debuts, your chances of seeing it prominently on the list of Hot New Releases will soar.
Your book will receive a great deal of publicity if you rank highly enough on that list. Your book will be promoted on Amazon above books that are comparable to yours, as shown below:
Finally, update your profile with your account details, publish your books, and watch how people respond.
Do not be greedy, make it less than $3.
