Meta competes with Google and Microsoft using an artificial intelligence chatbot
Meta Platforms Inc. introduced a research tool for developing artificial intelligence-based chatbots and other products, hoping to generate interest in its own technology in a field recently dominated by internet competitors Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

LLaMA is Meta’s latest entry into the realm of large language models, which “have shown a lot of promise in generating text, having conversations, summarizing written material, and more complex tasks like solving math theorems or predicting protein structures,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an Instagram post on Friday.
According to a spokesperson, LLaMA is not currently used in Meta’s products, which include social networks Facebook and Instagram.
The company intends to distribute the technology to AI researchers.
“Meta is committed to this open model of research,” wrote Zuckerberg.
Large language models are massive AI systems that consume vast quantities of digital text — from news articles, social media posts, and other internet sources — to train software that predicts and generates content on its own in response to a prompt or query.
The models can be used for tasks such as essay writing, tweet composition, the generation of chatbot conversations, and the suggestion of computer programming code.
In recent months, the technology has become both popular and controversial as more companies have begun to construct and test products based on the models, highlighting a new area of competition among tech giants.
Microsoft is investing billions in OpenAI, the company that developed GPT-3, the massive language model that powers the ChatGPT automaton.
This month, the software developer unveiled a test version of its Bing search engine powered by OpenAI’s conversation technology, which immediately sparked concerns over its occasionally inappropriate responses.
Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has a model known as LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications.
The leader in search and advertising is testing a chat-based, AI-powered search product dubbed Bard.
LLaMA is a newer and more sophisticated system than OPT-175B, which was previously released by Meta.
Galactica, a model released by Meta at the end of the previous year, was swiftly withdrawn after researchers discovered it routinely provided users with biased or inaccurate information.
On earnings conference calls and in interviews, Zuckerberg frequently mentions the significance of AI to the enhancement of Meta’s products, indicating that he has made AI a top priority within the company.
Although LLaMA is not currently utilized in Meta products, it is conceivable that this will change in the future.
Meta currently uses AI for a variety of tasks, including content moderation and evaluating content that appears in user feeds.
By making the LLaMA model open-source, outsiders can gain a clearer understanding of how the system operates, modify it to suit their requirements, and collaborate on related projects.
Last year, Big Science and Hugging Face published BLOOM, an open-source LLM designed to increase the accessibility of this type of technology.
